Home Remedies to Treat Diabetes

Diabetes or diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases, in which the person has high blood sugar levels. This condition may be a result of either inadequate production of insulin by pancreas or cells do not respond to insulin.
Diabetes is one of the most availing diseases in the world which has no permanent cure or medication.


There are mainly categorized into three types -
Type 1 diabetes mellitus:  The Pancreas in the body fails to produce insulin. It is seen in early age i.e before age of 40.
The patient with type 1 diabetes needs to take insulin for rest of his life. The glucose can be controlled by regular exercises and diet control.
Type 2 diabetes:  In this condition, the body fails to produce enough insulin or the cells in body do not react to insulin. It develops mostly on ageing older.
90% of cases in India belong to this type.
Overweight, physically inactive and eating wrong foods contribute to develop type 2 diabetes.
Gestational diabetes: It is seen in some females during pregnancy. The women have high levels of glucose in their blood due to lack of transportation to other cells, which results in rising levels of glucose.
It is majorly controlled with exercise and diet. Some of them are needed to take blood glucose controlled medications.

The normal range of sugar in blood level:

Fasting plasma glucose: 126 mg/dl
Plasma glucose: 200 mg/dl
If the glucose level in blood is higher than 200mg/dl it is regarded as high glucose level or hyperglycemia.

Complications of diabetes are:

  • Heart problems
  • Eye complications;  glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic neuropathy
  • Foot complications; ulcers, gangrene
  • Skin complications:  eczema, rashes
  • Hypertension
  • Neuropathy
  • Stroke
  • Male impotence

The common symptoms of hyperglycemia are:

1) Feeling thirsty
2) Frequent urination
3) Dry mouth
4) Tiredness
5) Discomfort

Home remedies to treat hyperglycemia:

Prevent Dehydration: 

Dehydration results in loss of salts through frequent urine. Drink excess of water and fluids to prevent dehydration.

Holy basil leaves: 

It is common called as tulsi. It contains antioxidants and essential oils which help pancreatic cells to function properly.
Eat two to three tulsi leaves daily or about one tablespoon of its juice on an empty stomach to lower high blood levels.

Flax seeds: 

They contain high fibre content which helps in proper digestion of fats that result in reduction of sugar level in blood.
Make flax seeds into powder, have it directly in powder form or mix in water.

Bitter gourd: 

It is good for sugar patients as it decreases the sugar level in blood.
Take karela at least a week in form of curry or for quick results drink one glass of bitter gourd juice on empty stomach once in three days to control the sugar level in body.

Billberry leaves: 

It is most commonly used in ayurvedic preparations and is called as neelabadari plant. It contains high amount of anthocyadins, which help in transportation of various proteins and fat metabolism.


Commonly called dalchin, a popular spice in Indian kitchen, is also used to control high sugar.
Take about half spoon of dalchin in daily food helps in preventing heart diseases.

Green tea: 

It has strong oxidant properties and helps to regulate and control sugar.

Drumstick leaves: 

It is commonly called moringa. The leaf of moringa slows down the breakdown of food and control sugar level in the body.


The heritage plant of India which has many medicinal uses also used to treat high glucose levels. It helps to improve blood circulation and lowers blood glucose levels.
For best results drink juice of tender shoot of neem leaves on an empty stomach.

Jambul or Indian blackberry: 

The seeds of blackberry contain glycoside which prevents conversion of starch to sugar. As a result the amount of glucose in blood decreases. It also protects from heart diseases.

Herbal powder:

Required ingredients:  Fenugreek powder, cinnamon sticks, bay leaves, cloves, cumin seeds, cardamom, black salt, black pepper and turmeric
How to use: Grind all the ingredients and make into fine powder. Mix one teaspoon of powder in a glass of water along with lemon juice and drink it in the morning on empty stomach.


Eat 3-4 raw garlic buds. Garlic has anti oxidant properties which help in controlling blood sugar levels.

Low carbohydrates: 

Decrease the intake of carbohydrate content and increase protein fibre content in food.


Broccoli is also effective in controlling increased blood sugar levels. Have it either in raw form or in the form of salad.


Fenugreek (methi) seeds are rich in sugar lowering properties. They help in reducing sugar levels in blood plasma.
Required ingredients:  Fenugreek (methi) seeds, water
How to use: Soak a teaspoon full of seeds in a glass of water overnight.
Next day morning drink water along with seeds on empty stomach.

Fig leaves: 

Fig leaves are known for their anti-diabetic property. They act by regulating plasma sugar levels.
Required ingredients:  2 cups of fig leaves, water
How to use: Boil 2 cups of fig leaves in water and intake on an empty stomach. You can directly chew them daily early morning.

Grape seed extract: 

Grape seeds are rich in vitamin E and flavonoids. Seeds are placed in capsules and consumed daily.

Olive oil: 

It is useful in reducing cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood. Cook food daily with the edible olive oil controls glucose level and prevents heart diseases.

Vitamin C: 

Consumption of vitamin c in the form of fruits, vegetables and other forms helps to control blood sugar.


Avacado seeds show anti diabetic property. The seeds are grilled and boiled in water. Strain the water mixture and drink when cool. It shows effect in two weeks.

Prevention is better than cure. Eat healthy and be healthy. Avoid junk foods and oily foods. Regular exercises keep you fit and healthy.
